Coach Danny Kerry was pleased with England's performance despite losing their unbeaten record at the World Cup with a 2-0 defeat by Argentina.
Noel Barrionuevo scored from a penalty corner and Daniela Sruoga drove inside the right post for Argentina's second goal as the host nation topped Pool B.
England failed to trouble the Argentina keeper or force any penalty corners.
But Kerry said: "We contained Argentina from start to finish and I am very happy with that performance."
England had already qualified for their first World Cup semi-final since 1990 before the game and as runners-up in Pool B they are likely to meet the Netherlands in the last four.
The reigning World and Olympic champions are unbeaten in the tournament and need only a draw on Tuesday, against a Japan side that has picked up just one point in its four matches to date, to top Pool A.
Kerry is confident England will give the Dutch, who are averaging five goals a game, a good test.
"They haven't looked as imperious as usual and we fancy our chances," he stated after insisting that England were unlucky to lose to Argentina.
England coach confident of Netherlands upset
"That's the closest Argentina have been run by a long way," he claimed.
"We could have penetrated a bit more but they were a bit clueless on how to break us down.
"Tactically, we were much better than Argentina we just needed to do a bit better up in the attacking end."
South Korea defeated South Africa 5-3 to take third place in the Pool, while China beat Spain 6-0 to finish fourth.
