Welbourn has been in good form in Sheffield |
Robert Welbourn continued his good form at the British International Disability Swimming Championships with a Commonwealth Games qualifying time. The 22-year-old from Lincoln achieved the feat in the S10 100m freestyle. Welbourn clocked 54.46 seconds - just outside his personal best, but enough to qualify him for Delhi. The time also qualifies Welbourn for August's International Paralympic Committee World Championships in the Dutch city of Eindhoven. It follows his European record in Friday's 400m freestyle in Sheffield. Welbourn, who is based in Swansea, was pushed all the way by Brazil's Andre Brasil. Although Brasil had a good turn and final 50m, the Briton kept with him to finish 2.15 seconds ahead of his rival. "My best time was within the qualifying time so I knew I had a strong chance to meet the time for the Commonwealth Games," Welbourn said. "I knew I needed to go faster than I have been for a year. "I have been working really hard in Swansea on my 400m but I have introduced some speed work into my programme. I really wanted consistency from my training and I have enjoyed it through this year." Among the other athletes to break qualifying times for the World Championships were Dan Pepper (S14 200m freestyle), James Crisp (SM9 200m individual medley), Natalie Massey (S14 200m freestyle) and Natalie Jones (SM6 200m individual medley). The squad for the World Championships is set to be announced later this week while swimmers hoping to compete at the Commonwealth Games will have another chance to qualify at the Worlds.
