Weir won four medals in Beijing, including two golds |
Double Paralympic gold medallist and London Marathon runner-up Dave Weir heads the British athletics team for next month's BT Paralympic World Cup. Weir, 29, triumphed in the 800m and 1500m in Beijing and races again over the same distances in Manchester. Danny Crates, 36, will also return to track action in the T46 800m. The Essex athlete carried the British flag in the opening ceremony in Beijing before being ruled out of his event through injury. The event on Sunday, 24 May at the city's Regional Athletics Arena is the first international elite disability competition ahead of the London Games and Crates is looking forward to getting back to action. "I was hugely disappointed following my injury prior to Beijing and am yet to come to terms with it," he said. "I'm not looking ahead to London just yet as I like to take my career year by year and Manchester is a good focus for me. I love competing in front of a home crowd and it's a great competition for the GB athletes to be involved with in the build up to 2012." South African double amputee Oscar Pistorius, 22, will also be competing after recovering from head and facial injuries sustained in a boating accident in Johannesburg in February. Pistorius, who won three gold medals in Beijing, will be up against local athlete Ian Jones in the T44 100 and 400m in Manchester. Athletics is one of four sports in the Manchester competition with swimming, cycling and wheelchair basketball also taking place.
