Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius has been released from hospital after suffering head and facial injuries in a boating accident.

The 22-year-old South African double amputee won three gold medals at the Beijing Paralympics in September 2008.

He was taken to hospital in Johannesburg last Saturday and underwent surgery on Sunday.

He had been boating with a friend on the Vaal River when the accident occurred.

Pistorius, who is nicknamed "Blade Runner" because of his two prosthetic legs, had both his legs removed between the knee and ankle as a baby.

He was cleared to race against able-bodied athletes last year but missed out on a place at the Beijing Olympics.

The South African is due to compete at the BT Paralympic World Cup in Manchester in May.
