Bushell beats biker in Tyne test

Mickey Bushell overtakes a stunned David Burdus in the Tyne Tunnel

Telford's Paralympics silver medallist Mickey Bushell has triumphed again - this time beating a motorbike!

Bushell faced the challenge of his agent David Burdud's 1200cc super trike in a 1km dash in the Tyne Tunnel.

The bike, limited to 30mph, shot away but, with 100m to go, Bushell overtook, clocking 41mph in his alloy and carbon fibre high-tec chair.

"The trike was fast of the mark," said Bushell, "but I had a feeling my top end speed would surprise David."

Burdud added: "It was like a scene from Top Gear.

"I thought I'd be well clear of Mickey after the start and that he would never catch me in the Conquest - but Mickey stunned everyone by pipping me at the post!"

Dame Tanni Grey Thompson handed over her mantle as the usual course 'test pilot' for the world's fastest wheelchair race, which takes place next Saturday (2 October), to the 18-year-old Paralympic 100m silver medallist.

"I am thrilled to see this event return to the Tyne Tunnel," said Thompson. "And I am even more delighted to officially launch the race in its seventh year."
