Norfolk is the reigning Paralympic champion |
World quad number one Peter Norfolk was the runner-up to American David Wagner in the Atlanta Master Series singles. Norfolk, 45, won his first two matches in the round-robin contest, which is the richest event on the global NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour.
But he lost only his second match of the season when going down 4-6 6-2 6-2 to long-time rival Wagner.
Hampshire player Norfolk now moves on to San Diego where he will try to win his fourth US Open title in six years.
Victory would also give him his 11th Super Series (the equivalent of a Grand Slam) title.
World number two Wagner, who is the only player to have beaten Norfolk in each of the last three seasons, also beat the Briton in the final of the Pensacola Open in April.
Norfolk's earlier victories in Atlanta came against reigning US Open champion Nick Taylor of the United States (6-2 6-0) and Italian Giuseppe Polidori (6-1 7-6 (7/5)).
Meanwhile, British women's number one Lucy Shuker secured her first doubles title of the year at the Tahoe Donner International Championships in California.
Shuker partnered German Katharina Kruger to success against Japanese second seeds Naomi Ishinoto and Yuko Okabe and was also a semi-finalist in the women's singles.
Jayant Mistry, who was playing in only his second tournament after wrist surgery in August, reached the last four in the men's singles and doubles, where he was partnered by fellow Briton Alex Jewitt. Britain's second-ranked quad player Adam Field also reached the finals in the doubles, along with Canada's Sarah Hunter.
