Norfolk claimed his second Super Series win of the year |
Peter Norfolk retained his quad singles title at the British Open in Nottingham with a straight-sets win over Israel's Shraga Weinberg. The world number one defeated his unseeded opponent 6-3 6-2 for a third title in four years.
It was also the Hampshire player's 10th career Super Series title - the equivalent of Grand Slam.
Dutchman Robin Ammerlaan defeated Japan's Satoshi Saida 6-7 6-3 6-1 to win the men's singles final.
Norfolk and Weinberg exchanged breaks in the sixth and seventh games of the set, but the Briton broke for a second time in the eighth game.
He finally consolidated the break on his fourth set point to seize the initiative.
Both players broke early in the second set before Norfolk stepped up the pace to develop a 4-1 lead and he never looked back after that.
"It's been a tough week and tough draw," Norfolk admitted afterwards.
"It's always hard to win your home tournament and there has been some very pressured and very high quality tennis.
"Shraga played well but I was very pleased with my own backhand slice and my ability to convert the big points. I'm delighted to retain my title and consolidate my position as world number one."
Ammerlaan, the 2003 champion and third seed, led 5-3 in the first set tie-break before Saida, the world number four, clawed his way back to clinch the set.
The Dutchman broke twice in the second set and levelled the match on the first of two set points.
After winning the last four games of the second set, Ammerlaan again started the deciding set in sparkling form, moving 5-0 ahead and securing the title with his second match point.
Dutch top seeds Jiske Griffioen and Esther Vergeer maintained their two-year unbeaten record as a women's doubles partnership as they beat third seeds Maaike Smit of the Netherlands and Mie Yaosa of Japan 6-3 6-2 in the final.
Meanwhile, Paralympic champions and top seeds Nick Taylor and David Wagner of the United States defeated the unseeded Dutch pairing of Dorrie Timmermans and Bas Van Erp 6-3 6-4 in the quad doubles final.
There was double disappointment for Nottinghamshire player David Phillipson who lost in the final of the men's second draw singles and the junior singles.
