Tanni Grey Thompson is competing in four events in Espoo |
Great Britain's athletes made a fine start to the IPC Open European Championships in Espoo, Finland, winning two gold medals and one bronze. Dame Tanni Grey Thompson defended her T53 100m title in 18.27 seconds while Stephen Miller held on to his F32 Club crown and Richard Schabel came third.
Meanwhile, wheelchair racer Shelly Woods came fourth in the T54 5,000m.
David Weir (T54 400m), Graeme Ballard and Ben Rushgrove (T36 100m) all qualified for their finals on Tuesday.
Grey Thompson was delighted to win gold but admitted the cool temperatures made it impossible to record a fast time.
"Obviously I am pleased to win but it was a slow time which was down to the cold conditions here," said the Paralympian, who is also hoping to defend her T53 200m and 400m titles as well as take the 800m event this week.
On Tuesday, Britain's visually-impaired runners Noel Thatcher and Paul Pearce go for medals in the men's T12 10,000m.
And in addition to the 400m, Weir also goes in the final of the 100m, while US amputee sprint star Marlon Shirley is in action in the final of the T44 200m and the long jump.
