David Weir was in superb form at the World Championships |
Great Britain's Paralympic track and field stars will be searching to win medals at this week's IPC Open European Championships in Espoo, Finland The 35-strong GB squad for the event, which begins on Monday, features a mix of youth and experience.
Paralympic champions Dame Tanni Grey Thompson, Danny Crates, Stephen Miller, Danny Greaves and Kenny Churchill will all be aiming for more success.
Wheelchair racer David Weir will also be bidding to continue his good form.
Weir, who won two golds in the 100 and 200m demonstration events at the World Championships in Helsinki, will compete in four events - 100, 200, 400 and 800m in the T54 category.
The Londoner will come up against the men he beat in the two races in Helsinki, including home favourite Leo Pekka-Tahti.
Grey Thompson will be defending the T53 100, 200 and 400m titles she won in Assen three years ago as well as racing in the 800m.
Crates will be aiming for a double in the T46 400 and 800m events after a year which saw him beaten in the Paralympic World Cup in Manchester in May, but recover to win over 800m at the London Grand Prix at Crystal Palace last month.
Stephen Miller will compete in the discus and club events in Espoo |
Among the first GB athletes in action on Monday is Paralympic champion Stephen Miller, who will be defending his F32 club title, hoping to make up for a defeat in the Paralympic World Cup.
"The Paralympic World Cup was a massive disappointment having been unbeaten for nearly 10 years, but I guess it shows I'm not a machine," said Miller, who will also compete in the discus competition.
"I will learn from it and know I'm in good shape this year as I threw a lifetime best one week after the event.
"There's always pressure in the club because of my record and that's natural, but I definitely won't be putting any extra pressure on myself.
"I have high standards and know how far I expect to throw and that's how I judge my performances, win or lose."
Throws coach Jim Edwards, who saw his charges win three golds, a silver and a bronze at the Athens Paralympics is hopeful his 14-strong squad can come back from Finland with more glory.
As well as Miller, Greaves (F44 discus) and Kenny Churchill (F37 javelin) are bidding to repeat their Athens victories.
"After the success of Athens I would be looking for a minimum of four golds from this event and I think we have a very good chance of achieving that," he said.
"Some of the athletes have been working very well this year and I am also confident of maybe three or four silvers and a couple of bronzes as well."
Visually-impaired runner Noel Thatcher aims to retain his 10,000m title on Tuesday after missing out on the medals in Athens.
"This year has been about taking a step back and re-evaluating what I have still to offer the sport and want to achieve," he said.
"I've had a good year so far and hope to retain my European title. Twenty two years on, it still feels great to get your GB kit.
"It is still an honour and I want to reward the faith that has been shown by the selectors."
