Brown was always in control at Alexandra Palace on Tuesday night |
Former BDO world champion Jelle Klaasen crashed out of the PDC World Darts Championship in the first round at the hands of Steve Brown. Dutchman Klassen could only produce a three-dart average in the mid-80s as Bristolian Brown secured a 3-1 win. Brown will now face Terry Jenkins, who survived a Joe Cullen fightback. Jenkins, seventh in the order of merit, raced into a 2-0 lead but Cullen, 21, shook off his nerves to level, only for Jenkins to close things out 3-2. "I felt a bit sorry for Joe when I was 2-0 up. I suppose I thought I'd got it easier than I did," Jenkins said. "Joe was struggling, I suppose I should have beaten him 3-0 but I let him off the hook and he came back well." Mensur Suljovic made it a poor night for the Netherlands as he punished Michael van Gerwen for a host of missed doubles to secure a 3-1 win. Serbian-born Austrian Suljovic, who went into the tournament 50th in the order of merit, won five legs in a row from 2-0 down in the third set on his way to setting up a second-round match against James Wade. There was, however, some consolation for the Dutch as Vincent van der Voort raced past Preston Ridd. New Zealander Ridd was well below the standard he had produced when he beat Michael Mansell 4-0 in the preliminary round earlier in the evening and was no match for the rapid-throwing Van der Voort. The Dutchman struggled to hit his doubles but still cruised to a 3-0 victory.
