The 15-time world darts champion Phil Taylor has been beaten by a 14-year-old boy from Swindon.

Josh McCarthy was given the chance to play a leg against Taylor after winning a competition and checked out in 15 darts to defeat 'The Power'.

"I never let anybody win, he beat me fair and square," Taylor told BBC Radio 5 live.

"He's a breath of fresh air. If he carries on doing what he's doing he will be up there with the big boys."

Taylor took on 15 challengers at the event in Bristol, with McCarthy, who was the first to the oche on the night, the only player able to overcome the 50-year-old.

"I'd known for a couple of weeks that I was going to play him," said McCarthy.

"I didn't know I was on first. I was just practising when I heard my name get called out and I had to quickly rush down to the board. It's a bit of a blur from there."

As well as being the current world champion and world number one, Taylor is the holder of the World Matchplay title and, in June, set a new world record three-dart average for a televised match of 118.66 in defeating Kevin Painter at the UK Open.
