Taylor has never lost a match at the European Championships |
Phil Taylor defeated Wayne Jones 11-1 to win the European Championships for a third time in Dinslaken, Germany. The world number one, from Stoke-on-Trent, had earlier beaten Mark Walsh and Terry Jenkins to reach the final. "I'm delighted to win another title, especially so soon after winning the World Matchplay," Taylor said. The 49-year-old, who turns 50 on 13 August, has won the World Championship, the Premier League, the UK Open and the World Matchplay in 2010. The 15-time world champion eased past Co Stompe and Andy Smith in the early rounds, but found things much tougher on Sunday. Taylor fell 2-0 behind to Walsh in his quarter-final but fought back to win 10-4. Jenkins then provided Taylor with his toughest test of the competition, with Taylor eventually prevailing 11-10 with a 12-dart finish in the deciding leg of the match. Taylor, who collected a first prize of £50,000, has won the European Championships on each of the three occasions that it has been staged.
