Van Barneveld celebrates on stage before a delighted crowd

Raymond van Barneveld hit a nine-dart finish for the second year running at the PDC World Championship.

The Dutchman struck on his way to a 4-0 second round win over Irishman Brendan Dolan at Alexandra Palace in London.

"To hit a nine-darter was wonderful and the crowd really showed their appreciation," said Van Barneveld, who finished with double 12.

But another former champion, fourth seed John Part, crashed out after a a 4-1 defeat by Kirk Shepherd.

It was sweet revenge for Shepherd, who lost to the Canadian in the 2008 final.

Part struggled from the start and after Shepherd started the third set with a checkout of 109, the Englishman held his nerve after that to claim the win.

A thrilling night was ignited by five-time world darts champion Van Barneveld, who had a boisterous crowd on their feet despite some erratic throwing.

He managed his nine-dart finish in the opening leg of the third set after some words of advice from compatriot and fellow player Co Stompe.

After winning the opening set, Van Barneveld lost his focus and went two legs down in the second set before rescuing the situation.

Then in the next leg he started off with seven consecutive treble 20s before hitting treble 19 and double 12 to achieve the nine-darter for the second year in a row at the World Championship.

Although not at his best, he had enough after that to wrap up a comfortable win and set up a clash with Kevin Painter, a 4-3 winner over Vincent van der Voort.

Painter led 2-0 and 3-2 but was pegged back on both occasions by the Dutchman before coming through.

Shepherd will now face former BDO world champion Mark Webster after the Welshman beat Peter Manley 4-2.

Webster made a shaky start, losing the first two sets but he then reeled off eight legs in a row which helped him go into a 3-2 lead.

Manley missed seven darts to send the match into a deciding set and Webster finally sealed victory with double 12.

Ronnie Baxter defeated Gary Anderson 4-0 and will meet Colin Lloyd in the next round after he squeezed through 4-3 against Denis Ovens.
