Painter just missed a nine-dart finish but beat Van Barneveld 4-2

"The Artist", 40, just missed a nine-darter but showed storming form to beat the Dutch legend 4-2 and book a quarter-final against Adrian Lewis.

Earlier, Lewis had come back from 2-0 down to beat Tony Eccles 4-3.

Kirk Shepherd, Peter Manley, James Wade and John Part also made the last eight on a busy day at Alexandra Palace.

A jubilant Painter said: "A nine-darter would have been nice, but just the winning double does for me.

"Raymond has been a great champion - but sometimes it's someone else's day and it happened to be mine tonight."

Lewis was 2-0 down in legs in the third set before he battled back, and admitted: "I believe I can win this tournament but I'll have to perform better.

"I believe in myself and even if Tony had gone 3-0 up, I knew he had come back yesterday and I could."

Meanwhile, number three seed Wade beat Mark Dudbridge 4-2 as both players struggled with illness, to earn a quarter-final meeting with Canada's Part, who whitewashed Alex Roy 4-0 in the final game of the day.

In the day's opening match, debutant Shepherd continued his winning run by beating Barrie Bates 4-3.
