Third seed Wade has already enjoyed success this year

Wade, the World Matchplay and World Grand Prix winner, took the first eight legs of the match and dropped just one leg on his way to victory.

Former champion John Part also advanced, after a 3-1 win over South African Charles Losper.

But 20th seed Colin Osbourne and 22nd seed Andy Smith both went out.

Osborne lost 3-1 to Dutchman Erwin Extercatte, who defied 10 maximums from his opponent to progress to the second round.

Austrian qualifier Mensur Suljovic came from 2-1 down to beat Smith 3-2 and move into the last 32.

Alan Warriner-Little, the 28th seed, survived a scare from China's Shi Yongsheng before winning 3-1.

The 14th seed Ronnie Baxter was made to work hard by Canadian Dan Olson before sealing a 3-2 win and will next face Mark Dudbridge, a 3-1 victor over Steve Hine.

Steve Beaton had no problems with a 3-0 success over Steve Evans to set up a second-round clash with James Wade.

Despite his easy win, Wade insisted he was far from relaxed during the game.

"Looks can be deceiving," he admitted. "It's just very nerve-wracking and you just want to get that game, if you can, under your belt.

"It makes it a nice Christmas."
