British Olympic bronze medallist Chris Newton took gold in the points race on his return to Beijing on day one of the World Cup event at Laoshan Velodrome.

Newton, 35, won six of the 12 sprints to finish with 35 points, 15 more than the next rider, Zachary Bell of Canada.

Having won the points race at the opening World Cup event in Manchester he leads the overall event standings.

However, the second British rider in the final, Luke Rowe, finished 17th after losing a lap on the field.

In the individual pursuit, David O'Loughlin became the first Irish rider to win a World Cup medal when he took bronze with a win over Ukrainian Volodymyr Diudia in the third/fourth place race.

Newton, who is part of a five-man GB endurance squad in Beijing, competes in the scratch race on Saturday.

He is the only Great Britain medallist returning to China for this event, the fourth of five in the World Cup series.

Rob Hayles, who was an Olympic medallist in Athens, and Peter Kennaugh will compete together in the Madison on Sunday, after coming sixth in the last World Cup event in Columbia.

Youngsters Rowe and Mark Christian will form a second Madison duo, racing as Team 100% ME.

Many of the rest of the GB squad, who won 12 Olympic medals, including seven golds, rode in the World Cup opener in Manchester last October but chose to miss the three events that followed.

They are expected back in action in the final event in Copenhagen in February, a month before the World Championships in Pruszkow, Poland.
