IOM's Kennaugh heads for Columbia

Peter Kennaugh
Kennaugh will compete in two events in Columbia

Isle of Man cyclist Peter Kennaugh is preparing for the World Track Cup in Cali, Columbia later this week.

Kennaugh will team up with Rob Hayles for the madison on Saturday and is also entered in the points race on Thursday.

The 19-year-old from Douglas has been described in the cycling press as one of Britain's brightest prospects for the future.

"Peter is doing so well and we are really proud of him," said Isle of Man national cycling coach Mike Doyle.

"He's coming up to maturity now and it looks as though he could turn professional within the next couple of years.

"If this happens he will be the third cyclist from the Isle of Man to do this as Mark Cavendish and Jonny Bellis are already there.

"I find it amazing that a small island in the middle of the Irish Sea can keep producing world-class cyclists. I know of at least one other young cyclist who won't be far behind."

Kennaugh, Mark Cavendish and Johnny Bellis have all received support from the Manx Sports Aid foundation, which was set up to help local sportsmen and women become world class athletes.
