Malvern mountain biking champion Liam Killeen is determined to use his Olympic disappointments as a spur to drive him on for the London Games.

Killeen crashed on the first lap of his race in Beijing but is already eyeing up a medal in 2012.

He told BBC Hereford and Worcester: "I'm still very disappointed but it's probably good to keep that in the back of my mind over the next four years.

"I know that I've got the potential to win a medal in 2012 so that's my goal."

The Worcestershire-based rider was among the favourites going into the Beijing race but the first-lap crash saw him winded and sitting on the side of the track as the rest of the riders streamed past him.

He eventually rejoined at the back of the 50-strong field, but battled his way up to seventh spot by the end of the race.

"I know my fitness was good enough to win a medal and I can only build on that," he said.

"There's a lot more racing to do between now and London and it's just a case of believing in yourself, building up that fitness and not crashing," he added.

Killeen has already tasted the experience of riding in front of a partisan home crowd at a major tournament feels this can only work to his advantage in 2012.

"I've had the opportunity to race in my home country in the Commonwealth Games in Manchester in 2002 and I rode out of my skin," he said.

"A lot of that was down to the home support and you definitely get a big boost from the home crowd and that can only add to your performance."
