Cavendish is now one of the world's fastest sprint cyclists |
Mark Cavendish will miss the Tour of Britain after it was announced he will compete in the Tour of Missouri, which takes place at the same time. The 23-year-old, who romped to four stage victories in this year's Tour de France, was confirmed for the event with Colombia team-mate Michael Rogers. They will try to help George Hincapie retain his title in the 623-mile race. Cavendish, meanwhile, pulled out of the Tour of Ireland on Sunday's final stage after leading the first three stages. | 606: DEBATE |
The absence of Cavendish from the Tour of Britain, which takes place between 7-14 September, is guaranteed as the dates clash with the Tour of Missouri, which starts the following day. He rode in the Tour of Britain for the T-Mobile team in 2006 and 2007. Cavendish is a big draw for sponsors and fans, even more so after his exploits at the Tour de France, although he suffered disappointment at the Olympics, where he and partner Bradley Wiggins could only finish joint eighth in the madison despite being heavy favourites.
