Freedom of Douglas for Cavendish

Mark Cavendish
Cavendish is the first Brit to win four stages of the Tour de France

Manx Olympic cyclist Mark Cavendish has been awarded the freedom of the borough of his home town of Douglas.

Douglas Borough Council said the decision had been made "in recognition of his outstanding achievements in the field of international cycle racing".

It was also made because of his service as an ambassador for the Isle of Man.

Cavendish, 23, claimed four stage wins in the 2008 Tour de France but failed to win a medal at the Beijing Olympics, finishing eighth in the Men's Madison.

A council spokesman said arrangements would be made in due course for the formal presentation of a commemorative address.
