Cavendish is the first Brit to win four stages of the Tour de France |
Isle of Man cyclist Mark Cavendish hopes to pursue two track gold medals at the Olympics in Beijing. Cavendish will partner Bradley Wiggins in the Madison event but will trial against Geraint Thomas for a place in the 4,000m individual pursuit. "There is still a spot for the individual pursuit," said Cavendish. "There have been a couple of guys try out for it but I would like the opportunity to ride. If I didn't think I could get a medal I would not ride." Cavendish pulled out of the Tour de France after 15 stages, having become the first Brit to win more than two stages in a year in the prestigious event. Wiggins, the reigning individual pursuit champion, is already assured of his place. Thomas is already racing in the team pursuit event and the final of the individual event is the night before team qualification.
