Lampre rider Marzio Bruseghin won the stage 13 time trial in the Giro d'Italia on Friday to move up to second in the overall standings. The Italian time trial champion clocked 28 minutes 55 seconds for the hilly 12.6km circuit from Biella to Oropa.
Compatriot Leonardo Piepoli, who rides for the Saunier Duval team, finished one second adrift.
Race leader Danilo Di Luca was eight seconds back in third but strengthened his grip on the leader's pink jersey.
Rivals Andy Schleck, Gilberto Simoni and Damiano Cunego all slipped back.
Di Luca finished 32 secs ahead of Luxemburg's Schleck, 30 secs ahead of Lampre's Cunego and 58 secs ahead of Simoni, also of Saunier Duval.
It means that Di Luca leads Bruseghin by 55 secs in the general classification, with Schleck in third place, one minute 57 secs back.
Bruseghin has been a professional for 11 years but his stage victory was his first in the Giro and only the second victory of his career, after he won the Italian time-trial title in 2006.
"It's great to win a stage but I'm not an overall favourite for the Giro d'Italia and Di Luca does not need to worry about me," said Bruseghin.
"I'd need a 200-km final time trial to be able to beat him or we'd have to put a 10-kg rucksack on his back in the mountain stages.
"I'm a team player who enjoys working for others and I've no regrets. I'm happy just to hear the applause of the other riders and be respected for what I do."
