Australian Robbie McEwen out-sprinted Olympic road race champion Paolo Bettini to the line in the second stage of the Giro d'Italia on Sunday. McEwen broke with 100m left to go in the 205km stage to win in five hours, seven minutes and 13 seconds ahead of Bettini and Alessandro Petacchi.

The sprint for the line was marred by the mass fall 1,200m before the finish,
McEwen, 34, has now won a stage at the Giro for the 12th time. Last year he won three stages before retiring as he had done in previous years.
