McCann said the victory was the best win of his career |
Belfast cyclist David McCann took a step nearer selection for the Olympic Games by winning the FDB Milk Ras in Dublin on Sunday. A strong performance by the Irish team in Sunday's final stage ensured that McCann retained his 36-second advantage over Slovenia's Valter Bonca.
"Every Irish rider wants to win the Ras and it's definitely the best win of my career," said the 31-year-old.
McCann finished ninth in Sunday's final stage won by Britain's Malcolm Elliott.
Another Irishman David O'Loughlin finished third overall while Galway rider Dermot Nally took fourth.
McCann and professional Mark Scanlon are now the strong favourites to earn the two cycling berths open to Ireland in Atlanta.
