McCann served a six-month ban last year for a doping offence |
Belfast rider David McCann finished 27th in Thursday's Elite Men's Individual Time Trial at the World Road Championships in Hamilton, Canada.
McCann finished 3:42 seconds off the winning time set by Scottish rider David Millar for the 41.6 kilometre distance.
The Irish rider's target had been to finish in the top 15 nations which would have guaranteed him a place in Athens but he just missed out, finishing 18th.
Despite this, McCann is still reckoned to have a good chance of being selected for the Olympics after his bronze medal performance at the World B Championships in Switzerland earlier this year.
Miller finished a one minute and twenty five seconds ahead of Michael Rogers of Australia while German rider Uwe Peschel was just over half a second further back in third.
