Belfast cyclist David McCann claimed a bronze medal in Switzerland on Sunday and helped the Ireland team secure two places in the 2004 Olympic Games road race. It was an excellent start to the Irish team's B World Championships campaign over the tough 151 kilometre course in Aigle.
McCann was involved in a breakaway with several other riders and came home just two seconds behind race winner Murilo Fischer from Brazil.
Ireland's team display has earned them two places at the Athens Olympics and star performer McCann must feel confident of getting one of them.
It represents a successful comeback by McCann from a six-month ban.
He was found to have had excessive levels of Norandrosterone in a urine sample taken during the Tour of Austria in June.
McCann insisted he had never taken a banned substance but said he did not have enough money to launch an appeal.
