Jackson was a surprise winner of the world title this year |
Scottish qualifier Stewart Anderson has knocked world champion Billy Jackson out of the Scottish International Open. Anderson eased to victory over the tenth-seeded Englishman 8-3 10-5. Fellow Scot Paul Foster, the fourth seed, defeated seventh-seeded Andy Thomson, the Scottish-born Englishman, by 10-5 9-4 in Perth. Ian Bond (12) beat Welshman Robert Weale (9) 9-3 8-8, while fellow Englishman Mervyn King (8) beat Welsh qualifier Jonathan Price 9-5 7-6. It guarantees a Scotland versus England showdown in Saturday's final in the tournament being broadcast live by BBC Scotland and the BBC Sport website. King faces Bond, while Anderson takes on Foster in Friday's semi-finals. Anderson produced some stunning shots to defeat Jackson but was obviously surprised by his progress despite having this month retained the world under-25 title. "I just can't believe it," he said. "I have reached the semi-finals of a ranking tournament." Anderson had accounted for former world champion David Gourlay before knocking out fifteenth seed Jonathon Ross. Top seed Greg Harlow and world number one Alex Marshall had both been knocked out at the second-round stage, while third seed Mark Royal exited in the opening round. That leaves former world champion Foster, Anderson's next opponent, as the highest-ranked remaining seed.
