The Flyers have only been in existence for six years |
Bristol Flyers sealed the English Basketball League Division One title with a 85-78 win at Brixton Topcats. London Leopards won their two remaining games on the weekend against Manchester Magic and Derby Trailblazers to put maximum pressure on the Flyers. That put them level on points on top of the table, but the Flyers came through to claim their first league title. "It was a very good performance and we're very happy," coach Andreas Kapoulas told BBC Radio Bristol. "We've been going for six years, this is our fourth year in Division One and finishing with the league title is a great achievement. "It was a close game in the first half but the second half was all ours. It was a long trip back, but we had a bit of fun." Kapoulas pinpointed continuity as key to the success and the development of seven of the squad's players coming through the junior academy at Filton College Basketball Academy. He added: "The secret is to try and keep most of our players, try to use the players coming through the system give them the opportunity to develop and keep the continuity in the system." Next up for the Flyers is a home game against the Derby Trailblazers in the play-off quarter-finals. Andreas Kapoulas will be a guest on BBC Points West from 1830 BST on BBC One on Monday, 28 March
