Wiggins is desperate to guide Derby to a cup final |
Derby Trailblazers coach Clarence Wiggins believes this weekend's away double header could be season-defining. They face Coventry in the league on Saturday and take on London Mets in the EBL Trophy semi-finals on Sunday. Wiggins said: "Getting to a final has been one of our objectives since the start of the season, so hopefully Sunday will see us realise that. "The semi-final is very important but we want to win our league game first so we'll probably go easier in training." Wiggins said Coventry Crusaders are a much improved team than the one Derby beat 93-84 at Moorways earlier this season. "If we were to go there unprepared, there's no doubt we would lose as other teams have done in recent weeks," Wiggins said. | I keep telling the guys at every training session that we're a really good team and I think they're starting to believe it |
"So our focus at least initially will be to focus on getting the job done against the Crusaders. Then we can start to think about Sunday. "The match against Mets will be difficult because they tend to put out a stronger line-up at home than they do on the road. "But we'll be taking the same approach as we do for the Coventry game. We'll look at some game tape and we'll try to identify their weaknesses. "I don't think they have great three point shooters and if we can keep them from getting too many offensive rebounds, I'm confident we can win the ball game. "I keep telling the guys at every training session that we're a really good team and I think they're starting to believe it. "But you know what? There's still room for improvement and we intend to make sure we do improve between now and the end of the season. "We have moments when we look really, really solid, but we need to reach the point where we can do that for the entire game and I believe that's something we can do as the season progresses." Derby beat the Mets 81-48 in the only other meeting between the two clubs at Moorways in December. Saturday's league match against the Crusaders at Coventry Sports & Leisure Centre tips off at 1930 GMT. Sunday's Trophy semi-final tips off 1300 GMT at the Science Centre, London Metropolitan University.
