Trey Moore had a 100% record with his 12 free throws during the final
Trey Moore scored 28 points as the Newcastle Eagles beat the Guildford Heat 83-71 to win the BBL Trophy for the third time in five years.
Moore, who closed out the Eagles' win with eight free throws in a row, was named most valuable player.
Newcastle's domination of the third quarter, which they won 23-12, proved the crucial break in the drive to their first title of the season.
Keonta Howell, with 30 points, led Guildford's scoring.
Guildford had slightly the better of the first half, but when their captain, Michael Martin, took a break on the bench after receiving his fourth foul, Newcastle set about winning the game in earnest.
Moore, Darius Defoe and Andrew Bridge combined for 13 points in a 15-5 run that shocked Guildford's home crowd.
Although Howell exploded for seven points in the final quarter, the veteran Moore was again the decisive factor down the final stretch.
He hit eight free throws in a row to seal the game after Bridge had hit a three-point play to give the Eagles a seven-point cushion with two minutes to play. Moore gave credit to his player-coach, Fab Flournoy after receiving his MVP award.
"He told us at half-time to get the ball in low - Mike Martin got a couple of fouls and that was a big help when he sat down."
Flournoy, who was winning his ninth title as a coach, was full of praise for his players. "This team has learned not to panic," he said. "We saw that in the first half - because we knew how they would come and attack us.
"I can't take anything away from Howell - he played very well. But I think Guildford ran out of gas a little in the third quarter."
"Winning is not a coincidence - he knows what he's doing," said Moore about Flournoy. "This man has a formula that works. I take my hat off to him."
