Windless inspires Riders victory

The Leicester Riders maintained their push for the play-offs after beating the Cheshire Jets 80-73 after overtime at the Northgate Arena on Sunday.

Riders veteran Tony Windless hit a three-pointer in the final seconds of regular time to tie it up at 65-65.

He told BBC Radio Leicester: "I was always going to make that shot. After that there was no way back for them."

Leicester are fifth in the BBL Championship, four points clear of sixth-placed Cheshire.

After watching his side perform well against league leaders Newcastle Eagles at the John Sanford Centre but lose 70-59 on Saturday, Leicester head coach Rob Paternostro was delighted with the win.

"Although we struggled again offensively in periods of the game we did play great defence, and we've done that two nights in a row," said Paternostro.

Paternostro also revealed that Windless had probably been inspired on the bus trip to Chester.

"Tony put a tape in on the bus which showed him playing well in the 1998 BBL finals," Paternostro explained. "And I think that fired him up!"

Leicester Riders next game is against Everton Tigers at the John Sanford Centre on 14 March, with tip off at GMT 1930.
