Worcester Wolves dug deep to beat title-chasing Newcastle Eagles |
Worcester Wolves enjoyed a successful weekend in the British Basketball League with wins over London Capital and Newcastle Eagles. The Wolves won 115-104 at bottom-of-the-table Capital on Saturday with Anthony Paez top-scoring for Skouson Harker's side on 31 points. Paez then scored the same amount on Sunday as the Wolves shocked second-placed Newcastle beating them 87-86. Harker's side had trailed by 17 points after only seven minutes. Having conceded 31 points in the first quarter, the Wolves tightened up considerably for the remainder of the game, conceding no more than 19 in any other sector. Their victory at the University of Worcester was helped by their success from the free-throw line as they had a 80 percent strike-rate, while Newcastle struggled to find their range. The Wolves led 87-86 with nine seconds remaining but, despite a frantic effort from the Eagles, they held on for a famous victory. Having top-scored for his side in both of their weekend games, Paez was named in the BBL's team of the week. He was joined by Justin Brown who was also in great form at London, landing 10 of his 14 shots on the way to a 23-point haul. Worcester have now moved into the play-off spots as they are now seventh in the table.
