Guernsey women's basketball team had a mixed start to their first ever season in the English league. In Division Two Midlands/South West the island side beat another new team, UWIC 94-56 on Saturday in Cardiff. On Sunday they travelled to their "home" venue at Hamble in Hampshire to take on champions South Birmingham Bears, but lost 77-49. "We stuck with them for the first three quarters before they ran away from us at the end," said captain Liz Kerr. Kerr top scored in Saturday's match with 20 points as Guernsey raced into an unassailable 30-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. Kerr was again top scorer in Sunday's game, but South Birmingham held her to 12 points, with Jenny Rees hitting 10 points.
