Worcester close in on final squad

Worcester Wolves are hoping to have a far clearer picture over the make up of their squad by the end of this week.

Director of basketball Mick Donovan says it will be a new-look squad, but he is confident it will be competitive.

"It's going to be a bit of a rebuild from last year's team," Donovan told BBC Hereford and Worcester.

"There's one of last year's squad who is still to make up his mind, but overall it's going to be a bit of a makeover," he added.

American point guard Will Funn has joined the Wolves for the coming season, as has talented youngster Andrew Wallace.

Despite the additions Donovan is well aware that the Wolves' growing fan base will be concerned about the possible break-up last year's squad that helped the club to the BBL play-offs for the first time.

But he insists that there will be plenty to look forward to.

"We're bringing in players that we are even more excited about than we were last year, which is good," he said.

"We've certainly increased the budget from last year in terms of trying to find players, and [head coach] Skouson [Harker] is in Lithuania to look at two players out there before we confirm our final signings."

Additional television coverage of matches last season has helped increase the BBL's profile and this is leading to increased investment from a number of clubs.

Donovan says the Wolves' lack of a major sponsor means they cannot yet compete with the financial big-hitters, but he is still confident the club will be competitive.

"We're still funding a lot of it ourselves, although we have got some companies that are interested in doing some corporate stuff with us next year," he said.

"We've got a chairman in Roger Clarke who's putting in money and different companies are doing bits that are helping us in a big way, while npower will again be our shirt sponsors and a major supporter of the club.

"But in terms of a main sponsor of the club, we still need one as we're still David against Goliath and that's the frustrating thing."

The Wolves will open their BBL season with an away match at Chester Jets on Sunday, 28 January.
