Joseph top-scored for the hosts |
Great Britain bounced back from their defeat in Slovakia to beat Group B leaders the Netherlands 63-39 in their Eurobasket qualifier at Meadowbank. Julius Joseph led the GB scoring with 15 points, and Nate Reinking added 14 in a low-scoring, defensive match.
GB established a 38-22 half-time lead with the aid of a captain's performance from Andrew Sullivan, who had 11 points and seven rebounds at the interval.
The Dutch were unable to close the gap to less than 13 points after the break.
Great Britain's defensive effort was so suffocating, it almost prevented the Dutch from scoring for a whole quarter - something almost unheard of in top-flight basketball.
Needing to start early on their last-quarter comeback trailing 52-36, The visitors only managed to get on the scoreboard in the very last second, as Rogier Jansen scored with a lay-up.
By then, free throws from Chris Haslam and Joseph and a three from Steven Hansell had already put the game safe for Great Britain.
The win means GB can travel to Albania for Wednesday's qualifier knowing that a win in their last two game this season will give them at least a share of the Group B lead.
