Nathan Robertson and Jenny Wallwork are through to the second round of the World Championships mixed doubles.

The English duo, seeded 15, recovered from a slow start to beat Valeriy Atrashenkov and Elena Prus 21-16 21-15.

But Wallwork suffered defeat in the women's doubles as she and Gabrielle White were beaten 21-16 21-16 by Petya Nedelcheva and Anastasia Russkikh.

Chris Langridge and Robin Middleton were beaten 24-22 21-15 by Zhendong Guo and Chen Xu in the men's doubles.

The Ukrainian pair of Prus and Atrashenkov established a 14-10 lead in the first game in Paris, but were overhauled as Robertson and Wallwork collected 11 of the last 13 points.

606: DEBATE

Seven unanswered points followed early in the second game as the English pair built a cushion that allowed them to close out the match in relative comfort.

The combination, who have been together since Robertson's partnership with Gail Emms ended in 2008, won bronze at the European Championships in April.

After being eased out of the opening game of their match, Wallwork and White provided some early resistance in the second as they traded points with the tenth seeds.

But Nedelcheva and Russkikh's class showed as they accelerated clear in the middle part of the game to make the third round.

Landridge and Middleton also started their match as underdogs and forced their fourth-seed Chinese opponents to dig deep in the opening game before eventually losing touch in the second.

In the men's singles England's Carl Baxter was behind for only one point in his 21-10 21-12 win over Mikal Matejka of Slovakia in men's singles.

However, Scotland's Kieran Merrilees fell to a 15-21 21-13 21-14 defeat to Kestutis Navickas as the Lithuauian asserted himself in the latter stages.

Baxter wrapped up his straightforward win in 26 minutes and Marrilees seemed to have his match under similar control as he stayed well ahead of Navickas on his way to the first game.

But Navickas pulled away in the second half of the next game and maintained his momentum to carry off the third.
