Water polo team make poor start

Jersey Waterpolo
Jersey won only one of their four games in Basingstoke

Jersey's water polo team could miss out on the finals of the 2009 South East Inter-Club Senior Men's League.

Jersey, who were competing in the first round in Basingstoke at the weekend have qualified for the final in the past two years.

But they will find it much harder this year after winning just one of their four matches.

They got off to the worst possible start, going down heavily to Worthing 18-9 in their opening game.

Jersey responded with a 10-4 win over Cranley but then lost their last two matches 11-8 to Oxford and 11-9 to Southampton.

Team captain Nathanial Snook told BBC Radio Jersey: "It's difficult to say why we played so badly, we need more match practice that's fundamental."

"We've got to really knuckle down and do some work before the next round if we want to make the finals.

"We should make them, the team is capable of doing it, we just let ourselves down."

The next round of the 2009 South East Water Polo League in Jersey begins on Saturday 21 March.
