Harvey won silver in the same event last year

Guernsey's Chris Harvey landed a gold medal at the finals of the UK High Performance Surf Kayak Series at Fiscal Beach, Newquay, over the weekend.

Harvey booked his place in the event earlier in the year and looked to improve on his silver in 2007.

He fought off stiff competition from defending champion Darren Basin, who was on his home breaks, in the finals.

Harvey told the BBC: "It's been a long time coming - it is a real achievement and I'm really excited about it."

Harvey has been "close several times in the UK finals" and was pleased to secure his first win in this event.

He will be hoping to take his winning form to the last event of the season, the British Open in Northern Ireland on 18-19 October.
