Bromley combines sledding with his research role at Bath University |
Kristan Bromley won the World Cup bob skeleton title after a comprehensive victory over two runs in Germany. The Briton carried a 24-point lead over nearest rival Duff Gibson into the last event of the 2003/2004 season.
And he was more than a second ahead of Canadian Gibson on Sunday in a total time of one minute 57.66 seconds.
American Chris Soule finished third on the day, but had to settle for fourth place in the overall standings behind German slider Frank Kleber.
Bromley was in a confident mood going into the Altenberg event.
He had won three of the first four races and had set a track record in Germany when winning the British title earlier in the year. Bromley, from Rossendale in Lancashire, knew he had to finish in the top eight to secure his first title.
He said: "An eighth place in the final event would have been enough, but my strategy was to go out and win.
"I'm extremely pleased, absolutely over the moon to win the title. It's really quite surreal."
Final standings: 1. Kristan Bromley, Britain, 229 points.
2. Duff Gibson, Canada, 200.
3. Frank Kleber, Germany, 171.
4. Chris Soule, USA, 166.
5. Kazuhiro Koshi, Japan, 150.
