Pippa Funnell is still well-placed |
Great Britain retained their lead over France at the European Eventing Championships in Punchestown. But defending champion Pippa Funnell faces a tough task in Sunday's final show-jumping phase as she looks to overhaul individual leader, Frenchman Nicolas Touzaint.
Touzaint has two fences in hand over Linda Algotsson of Sweden, with Belgium's Karin Donckers third.
Britain's Leslie Law is fourth on Shear l'Eau, with Funnell three fences behind the leader in fifth.
Law was the only rider not to collect time penalties on the tough cross-country course.
But British hopes had looked distinctly rocky when Jeannette Brakewell fell at the last water on Over To You and was eliminated.
Funnell, riding Walk on Star, and William Fox-Pitt with Moon Man had to complete the course for Britain to stay in the hunt.
And after being advised by the team manager to take a slower, safer route, they achieved their objective to keep the team on course for a fifth consecutive gold medal.
Saturday's action was marred by the death of Irish horse Horseware Fabio, who was killed after banging his head against a fence.
