Simone Vanni scored 20 points to help Italy to their third fencing gold in the men's team foil final on Saturday. Vanni, along with team-mates Salvatore Sanzo and Andrea Cassara, fought out a close 45-42 victory over China.
Zhaozhi Dong bought China back into contention with six successive points to level the scores at 42-42, but Sanzo claimed the decisive hit moments later.
Russia beat the USA for the second time in three days in a bronze medal play-off with a 45-38 victory.
