Turnbull still has a chance of making the Olympics |
Six Northern Ireland competitors are included in the Ireland Olympic team. Swimmers Emma Robinson and Michael Williamson are joined by Portaferry sailor Frazer Brown and Richhill's three-day eventer Sasha Harrison.
Coleraine's Richard Archibald is part of the rowing team while Paul Brizzel is the only athlete so far included in the team of 48.
However, 1500m runner Gareth Turnbull and swimmers Andrew Bree and Julie Douglas could still qualify for Athens.
Turnbull and three other athletes could be granted time by the Olympic Council of Ireland to achieve the qualifying A mark in their respective pursuit.
Turnbull has narrowly missed the Athens target time of 3:36.20 for the 1500m. He ran a season's best of 3:39.84 in Zagreb last week, but may now be granted some time to achieve his goal.
Bree was thought of as a certainty for his second successive Games but failed to make the grade in the 200m breaststroke.
Douglas was also short of her target time of 25.64 secs in the 50m freestyle.
However, it is believed that like their athletics counterparts, Swim Ireland has asked the OCI to consider giving the NI duo and another swimmer, a chance to achieve the necessary time.
Andrew Bree could still make the Athens Olympics |
That decision will probably be made when the OCI executive committee meet on Friday evening.
Meanwhile, Ballymena and Antrim club man Brizzel booked his ticket to Athens when he achieved the A standard time for the 200m in the World championships in Paris last August.
On the water Fraser and his partner Dublin team-mate Tom Fitzpatrick form the 49er class after a solid performance in the World Championships in Greece last April.
Archibald is part of lightweight coxless fours along with Eugene Coakley, Niall O'Toole and Paul Griffin and is at present training in Sweden under the supervision of national coach Thor Nilsen.
They booked their place via consistent performances through the World Cup series this year.
Eventer Harrison, 27, was chosen as a member of the Ireland equestrian team last month which makes up for the disappointment of missing Sydney due to an injury to her horse All Love Du Fenaud.
Swimmer Williamson from Lisburn smashed the Irish 200m breaststroke record at the British Olympic trials in Sheffield to book his ticket to Athens.
Coleraine-born Robinson was the first swimmer to achieve the A time standard in the 100m Breaststroke in breaking the Irish record.
