Pavoni broke three British records for his age group |
Essex swimmer Roberto Pavoni has won gold in the 400m Individual Medley at the European Junior Championships. The 17-year-old from Shenfield broke the British record for his age group to defeat team-mate Xavier Mohammed in the final length of the race. Pavoni beat the previous record, held by current Olympic team member Thomas Haffield, by nearly three seconds. It was his third medal of the games, held in Belgrade, having won silver in the 200m fly and bronze in the 200m IM. Pavoni also become the first male British swimmer of his age to swim under the two-minute barrier in the 200m fly and also broke his own national record in the 200m Individual Medley for 17-year-old swimmers. His three-medal haul helped Great Britain to the top of the medal table for the first time in the championship's history, beating Russia and Italy into second and third places.
