Gold medal rower hints at London

Rower Steve Williams has hinted he may look to complete a personal hat-trick of Olympic gold medals at London 2012.

Williams, 32, from Leamington, was part of Britain's coxless four that won gold in Beijing and was victorious in Athens four years ago.

He told BBC Coventry & Warwickshire: "The first priority is to just stick my feet up and recharge the batteries.

"I've earned a good holiday and I'll think about 2012 in a few months' time," added Williams.

Sir Steve Redgrave was 38 when he won his fifth gold medal in the coxless four in Sydney eight years ago.

Australia's Andrew Tomkins competed in the eight in Beijing at the age of 42 but finished sixth in the final.

"Your endurance gets better with age," Williams continued. "It's all possible but it's whether or not that's a commitment I want to go for."

Williams admitted he had considered retiring after each of his previous Olympic appearances, especially Sydney when he travelled as a reserve and did not compete.

"Sydney wasn't a great experience for me - I was a reserve, which is a rubbish job," he said.

"It was always my plan to go to Sydney then do something else but for a few reasons and a few people I carried on.

"After Athens I could easily have moved on to something else but I just thought I could do a bit better than that but I took a big risk in doing it a second time."

Asked if he had achieved everything he wanted to, Williams replied: "That will be the question that makes up my mind."
