British medal winners returning from the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games will get a victory parade through the streets of London, it has been confirmed. Officials said the triumphant athletes will be given a heroes' parade through the city on 16 October. Athletes are currently on track to achieve one of the nation's greatest medal hauls at an Olympic Games. The parade also hopes to celebrate the achievements of competitors taking part in the Paralympic Games next month. | 606: DEBATE |
Boris Johnson, the mayor of London, said: "To reflect the excitement and pride of the country in our athletes' superb victories, we've set a date in the diary now when we can cheer all our heroes and honour their extraordinary feats at this summer's Games." The British Olympic Association (BOA) described the parade as a "fitting tribute" to the outstanding achievements of the British squad. The British Paralympic Association (BPA) said it was "delighted" with the announcement.
