Nick Rogers and Joe Glanfield recovered from a poor start in the men's 470 medal race to win silver, Britain's third sailing medal of the Olympics.

The pair were initially off the pace but came back to finish the final race in third place, enough to take second overall, capping a remarkable comeback.

"That was the most intense race I've done for so long," said Rogers. "We came through and I'm really pleased."

Australia secured men's gold before the finale, and also won the women's 470.

At one point we thought we'd lost it - three races ago we looked like we had no chance of a medal

The French and Dutch ended the men's series level on 78 points, but France took the bronze medal by virtue of their better finish in the medal race.

Britain entered the medal race in fourth place overall, needing to finish the race at least two spots in front of France or three in front of the Netherlands to secure a medal.

In a scintillating finish to the series, the French boat finished fractionally too far back to challenge Britain for silver.

"We made a bit of a mistake at the beginning," Glanfield told BBC Sport.

"Every other boat who had a medal chance wanted to cover us, but then we did a good run and took a couple of boats.

"At one point we thought we'd lost it - three races ago we looked like we had no chance of a medal.

"We had our backs against the wall, silver was the best we could do and that was hard to take. I'm really pleased we turned it around."

Rogers and Glanfield also won silver in the 470 event at Athens four years ago, but Rogers insisted their win off the Chinese port of Qingdao marked a superior performance.

"In Athens we were going in with a chance to win gold and we didn't," he said.

"Here, we really clawed back a medal and we had a really hard Olympics."

Australia claimed both the men's and women's 470 titles on Monday in Qingdao.

In the women's competition, the Netherlands won silver and Brazil took bronze.

British duo Christina Bassadone and Saskia Clark finished fourth in the medal race to secure sixth position overall.
