Zara Phillips crashes out of Burghley William Fox-Pitt leads going into the last day after a fine cross-country performance moved him nearer to a record fifth Burghley Horse Trials win. The 39-year-old is two fences in hand after producing Saturday's fastest time on his veteran mount Tamarillo. Fox-Pitt leads on 39.8 and is third on his other horse Ballincoola, with Philip Dutton and Woodburn second. Zara Phillips is out after a crashing fall on Ardfield Magic Star, but was unhurt after the 25th-fence drama. Fox-Pitt, champion at Burghley in 1994, 2002, 2005 and 2007, won a bronze medal with the eventing team at the 2008 Olympic Games. Fox-Pitt kept his cool in trying circumstances |
Riding during the latter stages at the rain-hit Lincolnshire venue, the Dorset-based rider coped with worsening ground to go top. "Tamarillo was incredible," he said. "The ground was getting heavy by the time we went (three from last) but Tamarillo nipped round the course and was really fun to ride." Phillips was a late withdrawal from the Olympics team after her regular mount Toytown suffered an injury. The 2007 world eventing champion suffered more disappointment as Ardfield Magic Star stumbled on landing and Phillips was left on the ground for a few moments before walking away. She also retired her first ride, Glenbuck, who dislikes the mud and tired in the ground conditions. American Dutton was ahead for much of Saturday afternoon before Fox-Pitt's late charge, while another British Olympian, Mary King, finished the day occupying fourth and fifth places.
