Whitaker and Locarno 62 have suffered the same fate as Phillips and Toytown |
A second top GB equestrian will not be travelling to this summer's Olympic Games, BBC Sport has learned. Show jumper Ellen Whitaker will not receive a nomination to Team GB, two weeks after Zara Phillips was forced to leave the Olympic eventing team. A leg infection to her horse, Locarno 62, means the 22-year-old misses out. "I'm really upset not be going. Larry (Locarno) is a great horse," Whitaker, niece of showjumping legends John and Michael Whitaker, told BBC Sport. The British show jumping and dressage teams will be confirmed by the British Olympic Association on Wednesday. "Ellen was expected to be a definite selection having helped the team win bronze at the European Championships last summer," BBC Sport's Lizzie Greenwood-Hughes said. "Her cool-headed riding in the final round impressed team bosses and helped secure Olympic qualification." The equestrian events at this summer's Olympics were moved to Hong Kong following organisers' concerns over the possibility of setting up a disease-free zone in mainland China. "It's very disappointing that it happened at this time," British team manager Derek Ricketts told BBC Sport. "We've made a decision on who the team will be made up of, and we will announce it on Wednesday."
