Whitaker on Peppermill anchored the British team with a vital clear round |
Great Britain claimed the bronze medal at the European Showjumping Championships in Mannheim to book their place at next year's Olympic Games. John Whitaker, on Peppermill, ensured Britain's first European medal since the 1997 event with a clear round, while Holland beat Germany for gold.
David McPherson conceded four faults on Pilgrim II, with Whitaker's niece Ellen earning one time fault on Locarno.
But Whitaker held his nerve to go clear and steer his team to Beijing 2008.
Earlier, Whitaker's brother Michael, on Suncal Portofino, had a day to forget when he lowered three fences for the discard score of 13 which included a time fault.
In Sunday's two-round individual final, Switzerland's Christine Liebherr and L.B. No Mercy lead the field, followed by Germany's Ludger Beerbaum and Goldfever.
Ellen Whitaker is just over a fence from the leader in eighth on Locarno, with Whitaker in 13th on Peppermill, just over a fence away from Beerbaum.
