Oldham also won silver in the pommel horse final |
Gymnast Sam Oldham won Great Britain's third gold medal of the Youth Olympics in Singapore but Tom Daley only managed ninth place in his diving final. Oldham, who won pommel horse silver on Saturday, produced a flawless routine to win the horizontal bar competition. World 10m champion Daley, who is still recovering from a tricep injury, made a mistake with the third of his five dives in the 3m springboard final. Meanwhile, runner Charlie Grice battled hard to win bronze in the 1,000m. The 16-year-old from Brighton finished fourth but was promoted when Moroccan Abdelhadi Labali was disqualified for stepping off the track. Oldham, the triple European junior champion from Nottingham, overcame two disappointing results earlier in the week to claim his double success at the weekend. The 17-year-old missed out on an individual all-around medal on Wednesday after a crucial mistake on the bars while another error that night, when he stumbled upon landing, meant he missed out on third in the parallel bars by 0.100 points. "I am really happy because that goes some way to making up for what has been a tough week," he said after winning gold. "I am so pleased to have got a gold medal. I never thought about changing my routine and I just wanted to concentrate on getting it absolutely right, and I did, so I am delighted." Daley hurt his triceps at the European Championships earlier this month and announced this week he would not participate in his favoured 10m event in Singapore. The 16-year-old, who finished seventh in the 10m final at the Beijing Olympics, had not contested a 3m springboard event internationally since the 2008 World Junior Championships and had played down his chances before Sunday's competition. Grice bided his time to grab a battling bronze in Singapore |
"These kind of competitions, when you don't do well, really make you determined to do well in the next one," said Daley afterwards. "I'm going to take the anger I've got now and turn it into good training and make sure the next competition is the best one. "Mistakes happen on the day in sport and I just have to keep my chin up going into the World Junior Championships next week." Grice was delighted with his performance in the Singapore heat, having trailed in fifth place until a late burst helped him finish in a personal best time of two minutes 21.85 seconds. "It was hot but I coped quite well. It feels great," said Grice. "When they hit a 53-second first lap I knew they were going to die and the tactic was to sit in until the last 150m. "I could feel them getting away at some points but I just tried to keep calm and make sure I covered everything. I got in the best position using the least amount of energy at the start." Disappointment for Daley at Youth Olympics
